Eco Schools Silver Award

Eco Schools Silver Award

Woodlands High School is currently a Silver Award holder for Eco Schools. Next year we will be striving towards obtaining our Green Flag!

The award programme follows a very simple seven-step process that forms the criteria for the Green Flag and can be embedded into a school easily.

To become an Eco-School your school needs to follow the Seven Steps to ensure that Eco-Schools is pupil-led, involves hands-on, real-world learning and gets the whole school and the wider community involved. Schools need to form an Eco-Committee of pupils from every age group who then work together to conduct an Environmental Review of the school.

From this review they form an Action Plan for the school to cover three Eco-Schools topics, and then monitor and assess the results of their actions. You need to make sure the eco-work is linked to the curriculum and the whole school and the wider community is informed and involved. Lastly, the Eco-Committee involves the whole school in creating an Eco-Code and makes sure everyone knows about it and it is up in every classroom.

Along the way, a school can achieve a Bronze Award, followed by a Silver Award, through self assessment. This provides recognition of the work children have done in working towards a Green Flag. The programme is pupil-led and therefore easy to build into the school ethos. The small steps towards Green Flag help schools stay on track in very busy school environments.

The programme covers nine topics A school needs to cover any three of these topics to gain a first Green Flag – giving schools flexibility to incorporate work they are doing within the curriculum. There is lots of ideas and inspiration for schools on projects they can cover and how they can link to the curriculum by checking our resources and looking at how other schools have embedded really easy ideas into their schools.
