Green Flag Criteria

Once you have achieved Bronze and Silver status, you can apply for the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag.

The application for Green Flag provides an opportunity for your Eco-school to showcase their fantastic work on the Seven Steps. Once submitted it is reviewed by Karyn our Eco-Schools Delivery Officer, who will then arrange for a Green Flag Assessment visit from one of our Assessors. Our Assessors are very friendly (especially if you offer them tea and biscuits!) and are there to support you. Your visit is not an ‘inspection’– it is a celebration of the amazing work you and your school have done.

The Eco-Committee

  • Pupils volunteer and are then nominated by their peers to be on the Eco-Committee. This includes all KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4 year groups in the school.  Nurseries, colleges and specialist schools can adapt their Eco-Committee to suit their setting
  • Pupils are given the opportunity to invite along non-teaching staff to join their meetings to help them with a particular topic they have chosen to work on such as installation of solar panels or composting of food waste
  • There is a representation from the parents or governing body on the Eco-Committee
  • The committee meets at least once every half term
  • Pupils share responsibility with adults for running a meeting and keeping a record of the meetings
  • Minutes are displayed on the Eco-Board
  • Reports of committee meetings are made available to the Board of Governors and PTA
  • Pupil representatives ensure that there is communication to and from the Eco-Committee to the rest of the school

The Environmental Review

  • Pupils and adults on the Eco-Committee plan and carry out an environmental review of the school in consultation with some non-teaching staff covering all nine topics
  • A copy of the Environmental Review is displayed on the Eco-Schools noticeboard and communicated with the whole school along with detailed plans for activities for improvement
  • An Environmental Review can be undertaken every year as best practice, however it is only compulsory for the Green Flag award to be carried out every two years to coincide with your renewal application

The Action Plan

  • The Action Plan is included in the school Mission Statement.
  • Pupils on the Eco-Committee take responsibility for leading some action areas.
  • The Action Plan contains timescales, who is responsible and how your targets will be monitored and evaluated.
  • The Eco-Committee has shared the Action Plan with the whole of the school.
  • A copy of the Action Plan is displayed on the Eco-Board.

Monitoring action and evaluating progress

  • Some monitoring data has been effectively used in curriculum work by creating graphs and charts on energy and water usage, how much waste is composted, how much litter is collected etc
  • Evidence has been collected to show the school’s progress; data, costings etc. This evidence has been analysed and evaluated to help develop future actions

Linking to the curriculum

  • Environmental issues have been covered in at least three curriculum areas by most year groups; this is clearly evident in schemes of work

Involving the whole school and wider community

  • The school has a prominent and designated Eco-Board detailing all Eco-Schools activities, including a copy of their Environmental Review, Action Plan, minutes, before and after photographs and photographs of Eco-Committee members
  • The Eco-Committee regularly communicates Eco-Schools activities to the entire school and wider community through assemblies, school newsletters, by Parent Mail and approved social media
  • The wider community is involved in activities going on in and around the school, for example parents, carers, local businesses, environmental organisations, local churches and residential groups and homes

The Eco-Code

  • The school has an agreed Eco-Code that is integrated into the school’s mission statement and core values.
  • The Eco-Code is displayed on the Eco-Board and in all classrooms
  • The Eco-Code is known and understood by the majority of pupils and staff

Applying for your Eco-Schools Green Flag

The Green Flag is assessed by Keep Britain Tidy through a two-stage process:

  1. Online application form
    After logging into the administration site you will be asked to answer a series of questions about your Eco-Schools work and upload a small number of supporting documents.
  2. Assessment visit
    We will arrange for a Keep Britain Tidy volunteer assessor to visit your school to meet your Eco-committee and assess the work you have done to meet the Green Flag criteria.
